Domestar: bevelling and joist bracing

Depending on the thickness of your joists, it may be necessary to bevel some of them before assembly to prevent them from touching each other on the connector.

If your joists/posts are thick, they may touch at the connector, preventing assembly. You can test this before drilling your joists using a 6-leg connector (or for the Domestar V1, which does not have 6-leg connectors, a 4-leg connector: but not the 5-leg connector, which has more open angles). If the joists touch, there are 2 solutions:

– instead of drilling 40mm from the edge as recommended, you can drill all the joists at 35mm or 30mm. You will lose a little strength. Also be careful, compared to the figures in the calculator, you will increase the size of your dome because you are increasing the size from the centre of the connector to the centre of the connector.

– you bevel the part that rubs. Bevelling means cutting at an angle. To do this, you either use a hand saw (hard work!), a jigsaw (easy), a radial saw or a router.
